Henry & Lucy Teacher's Guide - Book - Page 150
Title Page
Use the picture to elicit information about the animals. Explain that this scene is of an African
savanna and point out Africa on the world map on pages 10-11. Point out on the title page the
jeeps and people who have traveled to the African savanna to go on a safari. Many tourists
travel on safaris so that they can see the animals in their natural settings. Ask pupils if they have
ever read or heard about a safari. Ask if they know anyone who has ever been on a safari.
Background Information
Climate
Information taken from this link: www.blueplanetbiomes.org/savana.htm
The climate of the savanna is a wet-dry tropical climate. The temperature does not change
drastically between summer and winter. The winter is the dry season, and most of the plants die
in the winter. The winter season begins in December. Some of the water sources also dry up in
winter, causing the animals to migrate, searching for food. The temperatures in the winter range
from 20-30 degrees centigrade.
The summer is the wet season when there is plenty of rain: the plants grow and rivers and
streams flow. The summer season begins in May. The temperatures in the summer range from
25-30 degrees centigrade. The animals migrate back to the water sources to find food.
