How is the story similar to The Magic Apple Tree story? (The apples keep growing
and the bamboo leaves are growing again.)
o Why will the pandas never be hungry again? (Because they will always have
bamboo leaves to eat)
Ask pupils what the moral of the story is. (The pandas also had to do something to
make the magic work. Magic does not solve all problems.)
Ask pupils if there is something real that people can do to help save the pandas.
Remind pupils that there is a serious issue that pandas are hungry because they do
not have enough to eat. There are also other animals that are in danger of becoming
extinct. Elicit ideas from pupils for solving these real issues, such as planting forests
and using synthetic materials for building homes.

Have pupils work in pairs. Pupil A reads a sentence and his/her partner decides who
said it. The pupils check with the text to see if they have answered correctly. Pupil B
then reads the next sentence and Pupil A responds.
Have pupils read their answers aloud so that the class can check their answers. Refer
pupils to the specific frames that provide evidence as to who said each statement. (1.
