Read the three sentences with the class. Have each pupil mark the sentence which
he/she feels BEST tells what the story is about.
Write the three sentences on the board and ask the class: Who chose number 1,
2, or 3.
Discuss each of the possible answers, explaining that all of the statements are true but
only one of them relates to the essence of the story. (2) Remind pupils that stories are
written by people who have a message that they want to share with others.
Guide pupils in a discussion about the moral of a story. Explain that many stories teach
people about how to be good or behave well. In this story the woman helped the boy
and he helped others. Have pupils identify the moral of this story. (It is good to help
people. It's good to give gifts. ) Review the words: give, get and gift by reminding pupils
about the story of Amir in the desert adventure, where the twins give Amir a gift (dates
and figs for his mother's birthday party) and get gifts from Amir (a flute and a drum);
and the parallel in The Magic Apple Tree story, where the boy gets a gift (an apple)
from the woman, and gives a gift (apples) to other people. Discuss the good feeling
one gets through giving: The Joy of Giving.
