Read the title of the text and ask pupils what they think the story will be about. Let them
try to guess how a tree could be a magic tree. Accept all answers. Tell pupils that they
will read and confirm or refute their predictions.
Ask pupils if apples grow on trees. Write the word grow on the board.
Have pupils circle the word apple or apples in the text. Ask them how many times the
word appears. (16 +1 in the title!)
Have pupils read the last two lines and underline the words always and never.
Write the words always and never on the board and explain their meaning in L1.
Write on the board: I always do my homework. I never watch TV in the morning. Have
pupils replace the underlined words with other activities that they always or never do.
Relate to the title of the story, asking pupils if they can predict what might be magic
about the apple tree.
Play CD Track 50 as the pupils follow in their books.
After reading the story.
• Ask pupils to explain what was magic about the tree. (It grew suddenly; there were
many different kinds of apples on the tree.)
• Retell the story, making intentional mistakes. Instruct pupils to stop you and correct
you when you make a mistake.
