a. Read the list and ask pupils what they see in the picture. (a village, a river, a farm,
clouds, a mountain, trees, pandas, children)
b. Tell pupils that the dragon, Henry and Lucy are going to describe what they see as
they fly to the pandas. Instruct pupils to listen and number the places in the picture
in the order that they hear them.
Play CD Track 48 and have pupils write the numbers in the boxes.
(1. a mountain 2. a village 3. trees 4. a farm 5. a river 6. children 7. clouds 8. pandas)
Play the track again and have pupils check their work. Have pupils sit in pairs to
compare their answers.
Ask: Where do Henry and Lucy see the pandas? (at the top of the mountain) Why don’t
the pandas come down to eat the bamboo leaves? (They are afraid of the people.)
Discuss the issue that pandas are afraid of the people, and so do not come down to eat
leaves. Remind pupils that this is not an imaginary problem but a real life problem!
c. Read aloud the five statements. Play the track again and have pupils mark the
statements as they hear them. You may want to stop after each statement so that
pupils have a chance to mark them.
(Yes, in front of you is a very big village; Look to the right, Henry, there are many
trees; What's that on the left? Yes, on the left there is a beautiful river; Now kids,
look down again.)
Listening Comprehension Script
Dragon: Okay, Henry and Lucy. Hop on my back. I can fly. I'll take you to the top of the
mountain.
Henry: Wow! Look down there, Lucy. I see a village.
Dragon: Yes, in front of you is a very big village. There are many houses in this village.
Lucy:
Look to the right, Henry, there are many trees. I see cows and sheep.
I think this is a farm.
Dragon: Yes, to the right there is a farm.
Henry: Hey, what's that on the left? I see a river and people.
Dragon: Yes, on the left there is a beautiful river.
Lucy:
What's down there, Dragon? I see children near the river.
Dragon: Yes, Lucy. The children are playing near the river.
Henry: What's happening? I can't see anything now. It's dark.
Dragon: Don't worry, kids. We are in the clouds now. There are many clouds.
Lucy:
We see the mountain! There's the mountain. There are more trees.
Dragon: Yes, there are trees there but the pandas don't come to eat the leaves.
They are afraid of the people.
Henry: Oh, we understand now. They don't come down to eat from the trees because
they are afraid of the people.
Dragon: Okay kids, let’s go. Up, up, up! To the top of the mountain.
Hey Lucy, stop jumping on my back! Next time you can go on a flying carpet!
Lucy:
Sorry, Dragon.
Dragon: Okay. Now kids, look down again. What do you see?
Lucy:
I see pandas. A panda family.
But there are no trees there, no bamboo trees. The pandas are so sad.
