Unit 3 3
• Have pupils circle all the words that end in the letter y. (cry, my, Henry, Lucy, fly, sky)
• Write the words that end in the letter y on the board.
• Tell pupils that the letter y can make two distinct sounds at the end of a word - either the
long /i/ sound or the long /e/ sound.
• Make a two-column table on the board.
y makes the LONG /i/ sound
y makes the LONG /e/ sound
cry
Henry
fly
Lucy
sky
my
• Have individual pupils come to the board, read a word aloud, and copy the word into the
appropriate column.
• Ask pupils if they know of any other words that end in the consonant y, that make either the
long /e/ or long /i/ sound. E.g. baby, hungry, angry, many; by, try, why.
• Refer pupils to Let’s Practice, Exercise 1 on page 109.
• Have pupils share their answers with the class. (1. my, fly 2. sky, try 3. cry, why 4. my, buy)
