4. Read and Match
• Elicit from pupils whether they attach a card to a gift that they give. Ask: What does the card

usually express? (Happy birthday; Have a safe trip; Welcome home; etc.)
Ask: What do you think Amir will write on the cards that are attached to his gifts to Henry
and Lucy?
Have pupils match the card to the gift it will be attached to.
Review the other kinds of cards we write for special occasions.
Have pupils underline the words thank you in each card. Have them underline the gift
mentioned.
5. Read and Say
• Before doing the activity in the book, write on the board: hat/hate, mad/made, Sam/same
• Model how the "magic" e at the end of the word changes the sound of the vowel a from the

short form to the long form, causing the vowel to "say its name".
Have pupils circle the words in the text that contain the a with the "magic" e. (late, cake,
dates)
Have pupils do Let’s Practice, Exercise 2 on page 89. Play CD Track 32 and have pupils
circle the word they hear: date, make, cake, late.
Have pupils come to the board and write the words.
