Point to ‘sad’ in #1 and ask: Is the girl happy or sad? (Elicit: sad). Ask:

What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘sad’? (Elicit: /s/)
What sound do you hear in the middle of the word ‘sad’? (Elicit: /a/)
What sound do you hear at the end of the word ‘sad’? (Elicit: /d/)
How many sounds does the word ‘sad’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and use your fingers to count the sounds: /s/ /a/ /d/ ‘sad’
Have the pupils say the sounds and count with you.
Say: Circle all the pictures that begin with the sound you hear.
Do the activity with the pupils together as a class.
Say: Look at #1.
Before completing each row, have pupils "read" the pictures across each row out
loud to review the words. Pupils should use their finger to follow the pictures as
they move from left to right.
Say: Circle the words that begin with the sound /s/.
Point to each word as you ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the
word (sad)? (Elicit the sound: (/s/)
If the word begins with the correct sound, have pupils circle the picture.
Repeat for rows #2-6:
