Say: Open your Epic Stories to the story on page 27.
Show the book cover of the story The Happy Tree House.
Remind the class that the book in English opens from the left to the
right.
Ask (use L1 if needed): Look at the yard. Who is in the yard? (Elicit: boys
and girls/friends)
How many boys/girls are in the yard? (Count together with the pupils and elicit:
5 boys/7 girls)
What do the friends do in the yard? (Elicit: play)
What do you see in the yard? (Elicit: tree, house, ball)
Point to the tree house and ask: What is this? (Elicit: This is a house.)
Point to the tree and ask: What is this? (Elicit: This is a tree.)
Explain that a house in a tree is called a tree house. Say: This is a tree house.

Say: The name of the story is The Happy Tree House. This is a story about friends.

Give pupils a few minutes to explore the story on their own or with a partner by
scanning it in their Epic Stories book from page 27 to page 40. Ask:

Find a picture of Father and Mother. On which page did you find them?
Find a picture of boys and girls playing. On which page did you find it?
Find a picture of a boy or girl who is happy. On which page did you find it? Find
a picture of a boy or girl who is sad. On which page did you find it?
Say: Let's read the story and find out what the friends do.

Read the story The Happy Tree House all the way through (or play the audio file).
•
After reading, ask questions related to the story and ask:
Where are the friends in the story? (Elicit: The friends are in the yard.)
What did the friends build at the end of the story? (Elicit: a tree house)
