Reading and Writing Readiness
Reading and Writing Readiness
•
Explain to pupils that they will soon begin reading and writing in English.
•
Explain to pupils that English is different from Hebrew and Arabic because it is
written from left to right (use L1 if needed).
Demonstrate opening your Epic Course Book to remind pupils that books in
English open from left to right.
•
Have two pupils come to the board and each draw a line from the left side of the
board to the right.
•
Teach the new vocabulary using the flashcards and gestures. Say: Point to (the
left/right).
Do the action and have pupils copy you.
Song
•
Teach and sing “We Read English” (song #2.60)
•
As you sing, have pupils pass a ball (you can use The Cube if you do not have a ball)
from the left side of the classroom to the right. Begin by passing the ball to the pupil
on the left side of the room. Have that pupil pass the ball to the pupil on the right.
When the ball reaches the end of the row, have the pupil bring the ball back to the
left side of the room to pass along the next row.
