Review the words before giving pupils some time to do the task on their own or with
a partner.

Say: Circle the words that begin with the letter in each row. Write the words you
circled.
Pupils can use the word bank to help them.

Reveal to check answers.

Point to #1 and ask: What letter is this? (Elicit: the letter S)
What sound does the letter S make? (Elicit: /s/)
Which words begin with the sound /s/? (Elicit: sky and star)
Repeat for each row.
Reading and Writing
Epic Stories

Say: Open your Epic Stories to page 118.
•
Point to the word family “-nd” and say it together with the pupils: /-nd/
•

Point to the vocabulary one at a time and read each word together with the
pupils: end, friend, hand, stand.
Say a word and have pupils hold up the correct number of fingers (1-4) to
represent the number of the word. For example, if you say “friend,” pupils should
hold up 2 fingers.
Then, say a number and have pupils say the word that matches the number.
Repeat to practice the words a few times.
Point to the title of the text and read together with the pupils: Monkey See Monkey

Ask (use L1 if needed): What do you think the story is about? (Accept any logical
answer)
Read the text together as a class or ask different pupils to read each line. Pupils
should follow along with their fingers as you read. Encourage pupils to use proper
intonation as they read the lines.

Say: All the words have the sound /-nd/ at the end.
Ask: What words in the text have the sound /-nd/ at the end? (Elicit: friend(s),
and, stand, hand(s))
After finishing the story, answer the questions orally as a class, or have pupils answer
them with a partner/small group and record their responses on a separate sheet of
paper.
