Phonemic Awareness

Say: Open your Course Books to page 171. Look at #4.
•
Do the first one with the pupils. Point to the picture of 'hot' in #1 and ask: What do
you see? (Elicit: hot). Ask:
•
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘hot’? (Elicit: /h/)
What sound do you hear in the middle of the word ‘hot’? (Elicit: /o/)
What sound do you hear at the end of the word ‘hot’? (Elicit: /t/)
How many sounds does the word ‘hot’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and use your fingers to count the sounds: /h/ /o/ /t/ ‘hot’
Have the pupils say the sounds and count with you.
Ask: What letters make the sounds /h/ /o/ /t/? (Elicit and point to the word
"hot" in #1: H, O, T)
Ask: Now, take away /o/ and add /a/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /h/ /a/ /t/ 'hat')

Say: Write the new words and draw a picture in the box.
•
Give pupils a few minutes to complete the activity on their own or with a partner.
Reveal to check answers.
•
Say: Write the word on the line. Draw a hat in the box.
Remind pupils that names in English must begin with a big letter (#4 Max).
Say: What word do you see in #2? (Elicit: man)
Take away /m/ and add /v/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /v/ /a/ /n/ 'van')
Repeat to find the other new words: six, Max, box, ten.

Epic Stories

Say: Open your Epic Stories to page 116.
•
Point to the title of the story and read together
with the pupils: My Hat
•
Point to #1 and ask: What do you see? (Elicit: I
see a small dog and the sun.)
•
Ask: What’s the weather? (Elicit: sunny and
hot)
Ask: What do you think the small dog will do? (Elicit some responses in English
or L1.)
Say: Let's read and find out what the small dog does.
