Performance Task
•
Say: Open your Course Books to page 169.
•
Ask: What do you see? (Elicit: I see the ABCs.)
•
Say: Now we know our ABCs! Let's make a class ABC poster!
•
Assign a different letter to each pupil (or pairs of pupils, depending on the class
size). Be sure to assign all 26 letters. Pass out index cards or pieces of paper
with the letters to keep track of who was assigned which letter.
Say: Make an ABC Poster.
Write your first and last name.
Write the letter I told you. Write the big and the small letters.
Write and draw pictures of at least two words that begin with that letter.
Decorate and cut out the page.
Present your ABC poster to the class.
•
Give pupils some time to write their letter and write some words and/or draw
pictures of words that begin with their letter. Pupils can use the completed ABC
Notebook (page 185) to find words to write.
•
When they are finished, ask the pupils to share their work with the class.
•
Have the pupils hold up their letter and say together with the whole class: The
letter is ___ and the sound is /___/.
Ask: What words do you know that begin with the letter? (Elicit the words and
pictures the pupil has added to their page.)
After pupils are finished, collect the ABC pages to evaluate the performance task.
NOTE
•
If available, the pupil’s work may then be displayed on an English corner in the
classroom, creating your own “ABC poster” at school. Display the pupils' work in the
order of the English alphabet. Draw pupil’s attention to the class ABC poster once it is
complete and be sure to praise pupils for their hard work.
Use the Performance Task Rubric in Appendix Vb to assess the pupil’s work.
Pupils should use the Performance Task checklist on page 212 to assess their work.
