Say: Open your Course Books to page 146. Look at #1.
•
Say: Trace then write the big and small letters Uu.
•
While pupils are working, walk around checking that pupils are tracing carefully on
the lines and writing the letters from left to right and top to bottom.
•
Say: Look at #2.
•
Ask: What do you see? (Elicit: I see (an) under, umbrella, up.)
•
Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the words? (Elicit: /u/)
Point to the letter Uu. Trace the letters with your finger on the board. Have the pupils
trace in their Course Books.
As you trace, say together with the pupils: The letter is U and the sound is /u/.
•
Say: Write the first letter of the word under each picture. Write the big letter and
small letter.
•
While pupils are working, walk around checking that pupils are writing the letter
accurately.
•
Reveal to check answers.
•
Point to 'under' and ask: Where is the boy? (Elicit: The boy is under the desk.)
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word 'under'? (Elicit: /u/)
What letter makes the sound /u/? (Elicit: the letter U)
Repeat for the other pictures.
NOTE
•
Challenge strong pupils (or a strong class) to write the whole word "up," by sounding
the phonemes of the word out together.
•
Say: Look at #3.
•
Have pupils read the words across each row out loud as a class or to a partner.
•
Say: Listen and circle the word you hear.
