Show 'zero' flashcard and ask: How many parts does the word 'zero' have? (Elicit: 2)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /zee/ /ro/ 'zero'
Have the pupils say the syllables and count with you.
Repeat for 'poster' (2 syllables), 'cake' (1), ‘milk’ (1), ‘kangaroo’ (3), 'ask' (1),
‘living room’ (3), 'chair' (1).

Say: Open your Course Books to page 139. Look at #3.
•
Say: Circle the picture of the word that does not begin with the same sound.
•
Have pupils complete the task on their own or with a partner.
•
Reveal to check answers.
•
If most pupils did not circle the correct picture, review the words together with the
pupils.
•
Say: Which picture did you circle in #1? (Elicit: hair)
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word 'hair'? (Elicit: /h/)
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the words 'guitar, green'? (Elicit:
/g/)
Repeat for rows #2-4.

Say: Look at #4.
•
Say: Read the words and circle the picture that matches.
•
Give pupils a few minutes to complete the page on their own or with a partner.
