Point to the picture of the 'men' in #2 and say together with the pupils: men
Remind pupils that "man" is one (singular) and "men" is many (plural).
Have pupils write in the letter e for the middle sound below the 'men' in #2.
Point to the picture of 'big' in #3 and ask: What is this? (Elicit: big). Ask:
How many sounds does the word ‘big’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and use your fingers to count the sounds: /b/ /i/ /g/ ‘big’
Have the pupils say the sounds and count with you.
Have pupils write in the letter i for the middle sound below the 'big' in #3.
Ask: Now, take away /i/ and add /a/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /b/ /a/ /g/)
