Performance Task

Say: Open your Course Books to page 131.
•
Say: Make a self-portrait.
•

Write your first and last name.
Complete the sentences to describe yourself and what you like.
Draw yourself.
Present your self-portrait to the class.
Give pupils a few minutes to do this.
Help pupils to write their last names if they do not know.
Tell pupils to look through the glossary (page 214) or flip through the completed
pages Course Book and copy a word to complete the sentence “I like…” For
weaker pupils, write some options on the board of words that are familiar to the
pupils, and that they know how to write: dogs, cats, pizza, bananas, etc.
When pupils are finished, have them present their completed self-portrait drawing to
the class. Pupils can read the sentences they have completed and show their selfportrait.
NOTE

If available, the pupil’s work may then be displayed in an English corner in the
classroom. Draw pupil’s attention to the board once it is complete and be sure to
praise pupils for their work.
Use the Performance Task Rubric in Appendix Vb to assess the pupil’s work.
Pupils should use the Performance Task checklist on page 213 to assess their work.
Phonemic Awareness
•
Say: Open your Course Books to page 133. Look at #4.
•
Point to the picture of the 'man' in #1 and ask: Who is this? (Elicit: This is a man).
Ask:
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘man’? (Elicit: /m/)
What sound do you hear in the middle of the word ‘man’? (Elicit: /a/)
What sound do you hear at the end of the word ‘man’? (Elicit: /n/)
How many sounds does the word ‘man’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and use your fingers to count the sounds: /m/ /a/ /n/ ‘man’
Have the pupils say the sounds and count with you.
Have pupils write in the letter a for the middle sound below the 'man' in #1.
