Say together with the pupils: The letter is Z and the sound is /z/.
Which words begin with the sound /y/? (Elicit or have pupils come to the board
to point to: yes, yellow, yard)
Say together with the pupils: The letter is Y and the sound is /y/.
Point to 'yes' and ask: What sounds do you hear in the word 'yes'? (Elicit: /y/ /e/ /s/)
Ask: What letters make these sounds? (Write the word on the board as you
elicit: Y, E, S)
Read the word together with the pupils: yes
Repeat for 'zero' and 'yard.'
