Ask: What do you see? (Elicit: I see (a) zero, zebra, zoo.)

Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the words? (Elicit: /z/)
Point to the letter Zz. Trace the letters with your finger on the board. Have the pupils
trace in their Course Books.
As you trace, say together with the pupils: The letter is Z and the sound is /z/.

Say: Write the first letter of the word under each picture. Write the big letter and
small letter.
•
While pupils are working, walk around checking that pupils are writing the letter
accurately.
•
Reveal to check answers.
•
Point to the 'zero' and ask: What (number) is this? (Elicit: zero)
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word 'zero'? (Elicit: /z/)
What letter makes the sound /z/? (Elicit: the letter Z)
Repeat for the other pictures.

Say: Look at #3.
•
Ask: What do you see? (Elicit: I see a zebra.)
•
Point and say: Look at the word "zebra." Trace the letter z.
•
Say: Look at the zebra. Find and color all the letters Z you see.
•
Reveal to check answers.

Review the vocabulary using the flashcards: yellow, yard, yes.
Ask: What (color) is this? (Elicit: This is…)
Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the words? (Elicit: /y/)
Show the letter Yy flashcard and say: The letter is Y and the sound is /y/.

Have the pupils repeat.
Ask: Look at your name cards. Does anyone's name begin with the letter Y?
