Show 'mom' flashcard and ask: Who is this? (Elicit and remind pupils of both names:
mom/mother). Ask:
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘mom’? (Elicit: /m/)
What sound do you hear in the middle of the word ‘mom’? (Elicit: /o/)
What sound do you hear at the end of the word ‘mom’? (Elicit: /m/)
How many sounds does the word ‘mom’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and use your fingers to count the sounds: /m/ /o/ /m/ ‘mom’
Have the pupils say the sounds and count with you.
Ask: Take away /m/ and add /t/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /t/ /o/ /m/)
Say together with the pupils: Tom
Take away /m/ and add /p/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /t/ /o/ /p/)
Say together with the pupils: top
Teach the new vocabulary word "top." Gesture the meaning of the word by
raising your hand up high (or use L1 if needed to explain the meaning).
Add /s/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/)
Say together with the pupils: stop
Show 'dad' flashcard and ask: Who is this? (Elicit and remind pupils of both names:
dad/father). Ask:
Say: Take away /d/ and add a sound to /ad/ to make another rhyming word.
(Elicit: bad, mad, sad)
