Ask: Does anyone know how we say shalom or salaam in English?
If none of the pupils know, say: hello.
Say: Today I have a friend with me, but he is very shy. Maybe if we say hello
very loudly, he will come out.
Have the pupils say: Hello!
Do this a couple of times before Max comes out so the pupils will practice.
Have Max slowly come out of a bag or from under the table to greet the class.
Introduce yourself to Max:
Say: Hello. My name is _____ . What is your name?
Max answers: Hello. My name is Max.
Tell the pupils: Max speaks only English. Say “hello” to Max.
Have the pupils say: Hello, Max!
Together with the class, ask Max: What is your name?
Use your fingers to show pupils how the chunk is made up of four words. Count
to four on your fingers, adding a finger for each word as you ask the question.
Max answers: My name is Max.
Again, use your fingers to show the words of the chunk.
