Say: Open your Course Books to page 116. Look at #1.

Introduce the sight word: can
Point to the word "can" and say the word. Have pupils point to "can" in their
books and repeat the word.
Remind pupils of the lexical chunk “I can…” and/or use L1 to help explain the
meaning.
Tell pupils that this is another little word in English that they will see often and
that pupils should "take a picture of" it in their mind so they can recognize it.
Remind pupils of the sight word they learned previously: I, see, a, am, the, on, is,
has

Say: Color the word "can" in blue.
•
Say: Look at #2.
•
Point to #1. Read together with the pupils: I can sit.
•
Say: Trace and write the words. Read the sentences.
•
Reveal to check answers.
•
Call on different pupils to read each sentence.
•
Say: Look at #3.
•
Point to the title and read together: Yes, I Can
Have the pupils look at the story and ask (use L1 if needed): What do you think
the story is about? (Elicit: things I can do.)
•
Say: Let's read.
•
Call on different volunteers to read each line of the text. When the pupil reaches a
flashcard image, elicit the word from the whole class. Have pupils follow along with
their finger in their Course Book.
