Say: Say the words. Write the missing middle letter a or e in each word.

Give pupils a few minutes to do this on their own or with a partner.

Reveal to check answers.

Ask: Which words have the sound /a/ in the middle? (Elicit: pan, mat, man, fat,
fan, cat, hat)
Read the words with the pupils. Have pupils watch your mouth as you
pronounce /a/ with a big, open mouth.
Repeat to read the words with /e/ in the middle. Have pupils watch your mouth
as you pronounce /e/ with a more closed mouth than /a/.

Point to each box and read the word family groups with the pupils: -at, -et, -an, -en.

Say: Write the words from task #8 in the correct box.

Repeat for /-et/ (pet, net), /-an/ (pan, man, fan), and /-en/ (hen, pen, ten).
