Review the vocabulary using the flashcard: in
Ask: What is this? (Elicit: in)
Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word? (Elicit: /i/)
Show the letter Ii flashcard and say: The letter is I and the sound is /i/.

Teach the new vocabulary using the flashcards.
Present each card one at a time and say the word: igloo, Internet.
Have pupils repeat the words.
Say: The letter is I and the sound is /i/.

Ask: Look at your name cards. Does anyone's name begin with the letter I?
Writing

Show or draw an empty letter house.

Write a big I and a small i in the house. Be sure to show how to write the letters, their
position within the house, where to begin each line, and the proper direction to draw
them. Say:

Look at how big I starts in the roof… and goes into the house. Then starts again
in the roof… and in the house.
And small i stays in the house… and has a dot on top.
Trace the big letter I on the board and have pupils write the letter with their finger in
the air or on their desks, then repeat with small letter i.
As you trace, say together with the pupils: The letter is I and the sound is /i/.
