Say: Open your Course Books to page 80. Look at #5.

Introduce the sight word: the
Point to the word "the" and say the word. Have pupils point to "the" in their
books and repeat the word.
Remind pupils of the story “The Happy Tree House" and/or use L1 to help
explain the meaning.
Tell pupils that this is another little word in English that they will see often and
that pupils should "take a picture of" it in their mind so they can recognize it.
Remind pupils of the sight word they learned previously: I, see, a, am
Repeat to introduce the sight word: on
•
Say: Color the word "the" in blue. Color the word "on" in red.
•
Say: Look at #6.
•
Say: Color the word "the" blue every time you see it, and "on" red. Count the
words.
•
Ask: How many words "the" did you find? (Elicit: nine)
Ask: How many words "on" did you find? (Elicit: six)
•
Reveal to check answers.
•
Ask a different volunteer to read each row of words aloud as the pupils follow along
with their fingers, or read them together as a class.
•
Say: Look at #7.
•
Say: Find and circle the hidden sentence in task #6. Write the sentence.
Remind pupils that sentences in English begin with a big letter (T).
Tell pupils to look at the image as a clue.

Ask: What is the hidden sentence? (Elicit: The cat sat on the mat.)
•
Reveal to check answer.
•
Read together with the pupils (point to each word as you read): The cat sat on the
mat.
