Point to ‘mad’ in row #1 and ask: How do you feel? (Elicit: I feel mad.). Ask:

How many sounds does the word ‘mad’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and use your fingers to count the sounds: /m/ /a/ /d/ ‘mad’
Have the pupils say the sounds and count with you.
Ask: Take away /m/ and say /s/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /s/ /a/ /d/)
Say together with the pupils: sad
Point to 'sad' in the first row.

Tell pupils that ‘sad’ and ‘mad’ are rhyming words because they have the same
ending sound /ad/ (use L1 when needed).
•
Say: Circle the two pictures that rhyme in each row.
Have pupils "read" the pictures across each row out loud or to a partner to
review the words and circle the two pictures that rhyme in each row.

Reveal to check answers.
•
Ask: Which pictures did you circle in #2? (Elicit: snake/cake)
What sound do you hear at the end of the words 'snake' and 'cake? (Elicit: /aik/)
Repeat for rows #3-5.

Say: Open your Course Books to page 57. Look at #3.

Say: Look at the classroom. What do you see? (Elicit: I see (a/an) cat, bag, teacher,
clown, alligator, snake, desks, book, scissors, ball, apple, crayons, chair, boy.)

Say: Circle the items that begin with each letter in the correct color. Count how
many items begin with each letter. Write the number in the box.
Circle the pictures that begin with the letter B in blue.
Circle pictures that begin with the letter S in green.
Circle pictures that begin with the letter C in red.
Circle the pictures that begin with the letter A in yellow.
Give pupils a few minutes to find, circle, and count the pictures on their own or
with a partner.
