EPIC Teacher's Guide - Book - Page 143
To signal to the pupil to come back into the room, the class chants the “Knocking
on the Door” Chant (song #1.17) as you open the door.
Teach and chant:
1, 2, 3, 4, who is knocking at the door?
5, 6, 7, 8, come on in – it’s getting late.
9, 10, 9, 10, don’t be late for class again.
The pupil enters the room and looks for the object.
As they approach the object, the class says HOT. As they move away from the
object, the class says COLD.
When the pupil finds the object, they must say where it is, using a preposition:
The crayon is under the desk. The book is on the chair, etc.
If the pupil answers correctly, they choose the next pupil to play.
Do this several times with different pupils. Change the object you are hiding and
the hiding place each time.
This game can be played as a competition where two pupils from different teams
need to find the object before their competitor.
The Story: Together is Better
Act It Out
•
Say: Open your Epic Stories to the story on page 43.
•
Assign a pupil to act out Mrs. Anderson (the teacher), Jamal, Anne, Jamie, Mike, Tom,
Soo, and Andy, and have them act out their character’s actions in the story.
If pupils struggle, act out the actions in the story and have pupils copy you.
•
Have crayons, paper (blue, red, and white), 2 pairs of scissors, glue, and pencils
available to use as props.
•
Read the story Together is Better (or play the audio file). Have pupils follow along
with the story.
•
Encourage pupils to produce the vocabulary they learned.
•
After finishing the story, ask (use L1 if needed):
What do the friends have in the story? (Elicit: The friends have crayons, paper,
scissors, glue, and pencils.)
What do the friends help make in the story? (Elicit: a poster)
Why do the friends make a poster? (Elicit: It is Mrs. Anderson's/the teacher's
birthday.)
What can we learn from the story? (Elicit in L1: to help your friends, to work
together, etc.)
What do you like to do in school? Do you use crayons/scissors/glue/pencils in
school like the pupils from the story?
