Ask: Now add /b/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /b/ /a/ /t/)
Point to the picture of the bat in #2 and say the new word together with the
pupils: bat
Tell pupils that ‘bat,’ ‘at,’ and ‘cat’ are rhyming words because they have the
same ending sound /at/ (use L1 when needed).
Now, read the words under the pictures together with the pupils.
Point to the word "at." Ask: What letters do you see? (Elicit: the letters A and T)
What sounds do the letters make? (Elicit: /a/ and /t/)
Point to each letter and say the sounds, then repeat to read the word together
with the pupils: /a/ /t/ 'at'
Repeat to read “bat” and “cat” together with the pupils.

Say: Circle the word that matches the picture.

Reveal to check answers.
•
Say: Look at #10.
•
Ask: What do you see? (Elicit: I see (a/an) apple, clown, bus, talk, crayons, ant.)

Say: Circle the letter that makes the beginning sound of each word.

Read the words together with the pupils before they trace and write on their own.
Sound out each letter before putting the words together: at, cat.
Say: Point to the letter A at the beginning of the word “at” and in the middle of
the word “cat.” Point to the letter T at the end of the words “at, cat.”
NOTE
•
Weaker pupils should be encouraged to circle the target letter with a colored crayon
– if it is in the beginning circle it in green, in the middle in yellow, or at the end in red.
