Have pupils "read" the pictures across each row out loud or to a partner to review
the words. Pupils should use their finger to follow the pictures as they move from left
to right.

Say: Circle the pictures that begin with the sound of the letter you see.

Ask: Which words begin with the letter A? (Elicit: apple and ant)

Point to the picture of the cat in #1 and say: Look at this. What is this? (Elicit: This
is a cat.). Ask:

What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘cat’? (Elicit: /k/)
What sound do you hear in the middle of the word ‘cat’? (Elicit: /a/)
What sound do you hear at the end of the word ‘cat’? (Elicit: /t/)
How many sounds does the word ‘cat’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and use your fingers to count the sounds: /k/ /a/ /t/ ‘cat’
Have the pupils say the sounds and count with you.
Ask: Take away /k/, what do you hear? (Elicit: /a/ /t/)
Remind pupils of the lexical chunk "Look at"
