THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 2
Ask:
What’s the difference between the sentences?
Guide the students to noticing the addition of ‘s’ in the sentences with ‘he’ or ‘she’.
Which sentence has an ‘s’ at the end of the verb?
When do we add ‘s’ to the verb?
Who can tell me what the rule might be? (Have them try – the rule is that for
third person singular [stress the singular], such as he, she, it or a name, such
as Bob, we MUST add the letter ‘s’ to the verb.)
Focus on the time expressions once they seem to have a clear idea of the addition of
‘s’.
Good, now let’s look at the time expressions in each sentence.
Who can read them for me? (Have students read and you underline them on
the board.)
So what do we know about the Present Simple tense? (See how much
they’ve understood.)

Now write the following sentences on the board:
Father watches the news on TV every evening.
Mother mixes the eggs every time she makes an omelette.
My little brother plays with the dog before he goes to school every morning.
My friend lies on the floor when he reads a book.
My mother goes to the supermarket every day.
Ask a student to come to the board and underline the verbs.
Write on the board: Spelling Rules
Say:
There are a few spelling rules for the addition of ‘s’ to the verb.
If the verb ends in ‘ss’, ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘x’ or ‘o’, we must add ‘es’. So ‘teach’
becomes ‘teaches’, ’go ’ becomes ’goes ’.
If the verb ends in ‘y’ but before the ‘y’ there is a vowel, we just add ‘s’. So
‘play’ becomes ‘plays’.
If the verb ends in ‘y’ but before the ‘y’ there is a consonant, we drop the ‘y’
and add ‘ies’ instead. So ‘study’ becomes ‘studies’.
Write the following phrases on the board:
I try hard.
I stay home.
We sing nicely.
I dress quickly.
I watch TV.
You fix the car.
We brush our hair.
I go to school.
