More challenging: Have the students write at least three sentences, using at least one new word in
each sentence. When they are done, they should make up one more sentence, leaving out the word
and give it to their partner to solve.
7. Let’s Read! (Track 10) (page 27)
Before Reading
Say and ask:
Look at the text.
What kind of text is it? (a newspaper article)
Find the word ‘steal’ in the article.
What is the thief stealing? (The thief is stealing bicycles.)
Find the word ‘information’ in the article.
What information do we get from the article? (when, why, what, how many, etc)
Where were the bikes? (at the community center)
How many bikes were stolen? (Three)
Look at the title.
What do we know about the article from the title? (Bikes are being stolen in Lakeview.)
Reading
Say and ask:
Read the article.
Look for the answers to the following questions:
- On what days were the bikes stolen? (Tuesday and Wednesday)
- What do the bikes have in common? (They are both green.)
After Reading
Ask:
What kind of information do you think people could give the police? (Accept all logical
answers.)
What kind of clues do you think we can look for or find in this article? (the days, the color of
the bikes.)
Do you think the color of the bikes is an important clue? Why? (Accept all logical answers.)
Do you think the day of the week is an important clue? Why? (accept all logical answers.)
8. Let’s Write! (Page 27)
Have the students answer the questions in their notebooks.
When they are finished, discuss the answers and the importance of taking notes and
remembering information.
Remind them that there is a mystery – someone is stealing bikes in Lakeview.
Explain that they are to write complete sentences when they answer the questions.
