what the people say.)
Reading
Frame 1
Have the students read frame 1 of the comic strip.
Ask:
What is Kate doing? (reading an e-mail on her computer)
What is Tom doing? (looking over her shoulder / reading the e-mail with Kate)
What’s special about the e-mail they are reading? (There is a secret message.)
NOTE: Make sure the expression ‘secret message’ is clear to everyone as it’s very important for this
passage.
Continue reading one frame at a time, asking the following questions for each.
Frame 2
Ask:
Who is now standing next to Kate and Tom? (Professor Sparky – his hologram. Explain to the
students what a hologram is; a three - dimensional image)
What does Professor Sparky’s say? ("Hi! I'm Professor Sparky and this is my owl, Hootie".)
He looks at the computer and what does he say? ("That is MY secret message. Can you read
it?")
Where did he come from? What do you think? (Let the students guess.)
Is Professor Sparky really there? (No, he’s a hologram.)
So how do you think Kate and Tom are talking to him? (Accept all possible answers.)
How did Professor Sparky make this hologram of himself? (Accept all logical guesses; try to
lead them toward "He invented it.")
Frame 3
Ask:
How will Kate and Tom read the secret message? (They will get the key to the code.)
Where will they get the key to the code? (in another e-mail)
Frame 4
Ask:
How did Prof. Sparky get there? (He is an inventor. He got there through the hologram
which he says is one of his best inventions.)
