Use L1 to explain that these are formal expressions used in formal
invitations (important for general knowledge).
Appreciation of Language
NOTE: These two expressions are a perfect example of
how the English language works. Explain them to the
students while calling on them to try to guess why we
would use these expressions formally.
Request the pleasure of your company; each word can
be explained as follows:
’to request’ means to ask for something);
’pleasure ’ means something wonderful, or
something that makes me happy;
’your company’ means having you as a guest;
Official reception
’official ’ means something that is done for the
people in charge, in this case the person who is
called ‘His Royal Highness’;
’reception ’ is a kind of party, with food, drinks
and some music.
