PART 2: The Secret Code (pages 4-7)
Let's Remember

Curriculum:
AI: Students will use simple information
tools such as a glossary, a simplified
learner’s dictionary and a table of
contents.
Who did we meet last lesson? (the characters Kate,
Tom, and Prof. Sparky)
What did we see in the big picture? (Have students review whatever they remember.)

Present the new words on the board. Either use the flashcards or write the
words. Discuss each word, giving a synonym, a definition, or a translation of the
word. For example, the word 'invent' can be presented as ‘to make something
that no one else made’; or the word ‘clue’ can be presented as ‘information
about something to help you understand’. You can give example sentences where
possible, such as "Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone."
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask
them to read the sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear
words, explain them. Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and write
their definitions.
For weaker students: Have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
For more ideas, go to pages vi and vii in the Yellow Pages section.
Play a Game
Write the first letter of the word on the board. Give them a clue to help them guess which word it
is. Use the same sentence you used when you presented the new words previously. The students
have to guess what word you’ve written on the board.
Repeat all the words orally, and then move on to the rap.
Curriculum:
AI: Students will understand the general
meaning, main ideas, and sequence of
events in the text and use this
knowledge as needed.
1. Let’s Rap! (Track 2) (page 4)
The rap should be used as a form of prediction for what to
expect in the upcoming pages and readings. Teach the rap,
one line at a time. Read it with the students and make sure
the rap is clear. Then read a line, have the students repeat.
Then read another line and have them repeat. Read two lines
together and repeat. Follow this process until you’ve gone through the entire rap.
