THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 6
Who is the mystery man? (Mike and Miss Lee call him "Your Highness", so see if the
students can guess that he might be royalty.)
Appreciation of culture and language
NOTE: The expression ‘"Your Highness" is extended to anyone of royal blood. In countries where a
monarchy exists, the common people would remember the royal family as "Your Highness". This
includes the royal family’s servants and their subordinates.
What is the mystery man planning? (a party)
Who do you think he will invite to the party? (Tom and Kate, and maybe not only them)
Who is going to deliver the invitations? (Miss Lee)
How will she get there? (by plane)
What do you think she means by my flight plan is ready? (Maybe she has a plan to go to
several places or people.)
After reading (HOTS)
What kind of party do you think the mystery man is planning?
Would you like to go to this party?
Why or why not? (Accept all logical reasoning.)
Let’s look at some of the words in the story.
o Your Highness
o invitations
o flight plan
Write the words on the board and ask the students to find the words in the passage. Then ask them
to guess what the words mean.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks.
Detective's Notebook! (1) (page 210)
Ask:
What do you know about the three people we just met in the story? (We know Mike from
Unit 3 – Tom and Kate’s friend, the artist. We met Miss Lee. There is a Mystery Guy referred
to as “Your Highness”, which indicates royalty.)
What clues do we have about them? (Because of the invitations, it is obvious that there will
be an event, a party.)
How can we try to guess who they are? (Accept all logical guesses. Write some ideas on the
board.)
Curriculum:
Have we met Mike before? (See if the students
SI: Students will express personal
can remember the character from previous units
wishes and opinions.
– see if they remember Mike from Unit 3, the
artist who drew pictures of the suspects.)
Where do you think Miss Lee is going? (accept logical guesses – write their answers on the
board and then after the reading see if they guessed correctly)
