THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
For weaker students: have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
For more ideas go to the Introduction in the Yellow Pages.
Reading
Say and ask:
Let’s look at the handout Jack brought Miss Santos.
Look at the title of the handout: Can you spot the bullies?
Look at the pictures and read the descriptions.
Let’s read each one and make sure you understand what is going on.
HOTS Do you think you can tell which is bullying and which isn’t?
6. Complete (pair work) (HOTS - categorizing and classifying) (page 190)
Copy the table in your notebooks.
Write X in the right column for each one of the cases. Use the table below.
Then we’ll check it together and see if we all agree.
When they are finished, draw the tally sheet below on the board.
Ask each pair to give you their answers.
Tally answers and see what the results are.

Explain that when we read the next text in part 7, they’ll find out if they were right or not.
Extra Activity:
Simpler: Have the students copy the different situations as in the chart. They should find the
definitions of any words they don’t know and copy them into their notebooks. Then they should
choose only three situations that they feel they understand best and write whether it's bullying or
not.
