THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
NEW WORDS:
advice
advisor
against
bullying
friendly
friendlier
friendship
unfriendly
VOCABULARY
Write the new words on the board. Discuss each word.
Point to the words ‘friendlier, friendly, friendship and unfriendly’.
Ask:
What do these words have in common? (they all have the root word
‘friend’)
How are the words different? (friendly is an adverb, friendlier is a
comparative adverb, friendship is a noun, unfriendly has the ‘un’
prefix that changes the meaning)
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
For weaker students: have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
For more ideas go to the Introduction in the Yellow Pages.
Reading
Have the students read the first two small paragraphs:
Ask:
Who is Mark Stevens? ( a student at Martin Luther King School in New York)
Appreciation of Culture
NOTE: Martin Luther King is not just a name, but the school is named after a great American
leader. Martin Luther King was a great African American leader who fought for civil rights for
the African American population in the US during the 60s and was shot by someone who
opposed his beliefs. For more information on Martin Luther King, go to:
http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1964/king-bio.html
What’s special about him? ( he and his friends thought that bullying is a big problem and
started an anti-bullying project)
Why do you think it’s important that the name of the school is Martin Luther King? (accept
logical answers but lead to the fact that Martin Luther King was fighting bullies of a different
sort but still fighting bullies. He wanted equality, and so does Mark Stevens.)
Have the students read the third paragraph.
Ask:
Why did Mark and his friends start the project? (they thought bullying is a big problem and
decided to take action and make a change)
What’s the name of the project? (KABS – Kids Against Bullies)
What does KABS do? (they offer advice, give the kids someone to talk to)
Why did they form KABS? (bullying was a big problem in their school)
Who is involved in KABS? (kids from every grade level in the school)
