THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
Detective’s Notebook! (1)
Group work
Have the students work in small groups of four to fill
in the chart with information about the characters so
far.
Do one with the whole class and explain where to find
the answers.
Curriculum:
P: Students will produce a short piece of
coherent writing.
Say and ask:
You have to find each of the characters in the unit so far.
There are six characters.
All of them are females or girls.
Let’s do one together so you’ll know what to do exactly.
Where can we find the characters? (on the first page of the unit, page 161)
Let’s do Hallie.
What do we know about Hallie? (Have the students explain that she’s a friend of Maya.)
So in the chart you would write: Hallie - She’s Maya’s good friend. (Do this on the board.)
Now the children continue to find the characters and fill in the chart.
Tell each group who is in charge of finding the names of the characters. (Ideally this would be the
weaker student in the group since finding the characters is easy but producing what we know about
them is more difficult.)
That same person should be in charge of dividing the characters among the group members, i.e.,
they will be in charge of finding the extra information.
When they have finished, draw the chart on the board and fill in the information based on their
responses.
Write the answers on the board so that all the students will be able to have the correct answers.
