THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
Ask student if they know other words that mean the same. Draw a word web on the board
and have the students copy the web in their notebooks;
evil
bad
mean
nasty
unfriendly
cruel
uncool
unkind
Look at the words UNKIND and UNFRIENDLY. They both begin with the prefix UN. What does
the prefix UN mean? (Explain that the addition of the prefix ‘un’ to the word makes it the
opposite meaning, like happy – unhappy, usual-unusual.)
Appreciation of Language
NOTE: Explain that in English, the addition of a prefix often changes the meaning of the word.
Compare that to Hebrew or Arabic. Does this occur in the students’ L1?
So if the word here means cruel, evil or bad, what do you think happens in this part of the
unit? (Accept all logical answers.)
1. Let's Talk! (HOTS – Prediction) (page 162)
Say and ask:
Curriculum:
Look at the picture.
SI: Students will answer questions about
Who do you see in the picture? (Nadia, Hallie,
familiar topics.
Miss Santos, Maya, Kate, Ann, Josh, Tom)
AI: Students will extract information
What’s going on in the picture? (Have
from visual data.
students describe the different events in the
picture – make sure they notice the important ones – Maya crying, Ann being mocked, Josh
about to fall over.)
HOTS— what’s unusual in the picture? (Accept all logical answers since some things might
not be unusual to the students, while others are. If something seems odd to you, ask why
they think it’s unusual and why other things aren’t unusual.)
Appreciation of Culture
NOTE: The school scene on pages 162-163 is a typical American school. The schools have lockers
along the hall walls; each student has his/her own locker in which they keep their personal
property and school books. Standing by the lockers, talking, being emotional, being secretive,
etc. are scenes that are common in an American school during a break.
Ask your students to describe the typical school in Israel and some common scenes.
