VOCABULARY
Write the new words on the board. Discuss each word, giving a synonym or a
definition via a sentence that explains the meaning of the word.
Extra: You may want to explain that ‘electric’ is an adjective and ‘electricity’ is a
noun because we added the ‘ity’ to it. You could explain that many words that
end in ‘ity’ are nouns, such as ‘popularity’, ‘responsibility’, etc.
Appreciation of language:
NOTE: Another interesting point about these words is use and reuse (p. 128 in
CB). If you want to go into that, then explain that ‘use’ and ‘reusable’ are
connected. ‘Use’ is the verb. When we add ‘re’ to a word it means to do that
action again, so when we add ‘re’ to ‘use’ we get ‘reuse’, which means "to use again". However,
when we add ‘able’ to ‘use’, we get ‘usable’ which makes it an adjective. And the addition of ‘re’ to
‘usable’ makes it an adjective that means ‘able to be used again and again’.
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
For weaker students: Have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
For more ideas go to pages vi and vii in the Yellow Pages section.
THE GREEN TEAM PROMISE: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
Ask and say:
Look at the text.
What kind of text is this? (a flyer or a pamphlet)
Read the title.
What do you think it means? HOTS
What three Rs does the Green Team promise? (reduce, reuse and recycle)
Why are these important, in your opinion? (Accept all logical answers.) HOTS
The passage says, ‘Being green means taking care of our planet’. what could you do to take
care of our planet? (Accept all logical answers.) HOTS
Let’s read each section and see what ideas the Green Team has.
Have the students scan the first line in each section (the green headlines) and ask:
What do they all have in common? (They are all calls for action.)
