DETECTIVES Teacher's Guide - Book - Page 20
THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE
Turn back one page, to page 119. What’s this unit about? (The Eco-Detectives)
Now turn to any page in the book.
Look at the left hand side of the page.
What do you see there? (the instructions – explain that all the instructions appear on the left
hand side of the pages, in the colored column on the left hand page and in a white column
on the right hand page)
Look at pages 79-80. What kind of exercises do we see? (Let’s Rap, Let’s Listen, Let’s
Answer, Let’s Read, NEW WORDS – have the students notice the different types of exercises
that appear in the book)
What do you think we’ll do in each of these exercises?
(accept logical guesses)
Now open to the inside front cover of your book.
What do you see? (the code)
What do you think we’ll do with this code? (accept logical answers)
Go to page 34.
What do you think Exercise 7 is? (time to reflect- encourage them to guess what they’ll be
doing here)
Now, let’s look at the first page of each unit.
What do we see on each page? (the new characters in the unit)
What do all the units have in common? (there is a mystery of some sort / we meet new
characters)
Now flip through the book. Can you tell which characters we’re going to be spending the
most time with? (it’s a good chance to see if the students understood that Tom and Kate
introduce themselves because they appear throughout the book)
Now open the inside back cover. What do you think this is? (It’s a game board. The question
cards and playing pieces are in the back of THE DETECTIVES workbook). What’s on the game
board? (accept any logical guesses, but try to elicit that it’s a map. On the map we see Tom
and Kate’s house near the orange space marked S1)
