THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 4
Part 8: The Town Hall Meeting (pages 150-151)
Let’s Remember
Ask:
What does Tom and Kate's dad suggest as a solution
to the problem? (Build apartment buildings instead
of houses.)
Remind students of the difference between a house, an
apartment and a home.
Discuss the title of the section.
Ask:
What do you think a Town Hall Meeting might
be?
What sort of things do you imagine would be
discussed?
Chances are that the students are not very familiar
with the concept of a town hall meeting, so explain
that in small towns, the mayor or the people who run
the town meet with the residents and they discuss
various things. Basically everyone is invited and anyone
can present an issue that they feel is important or urgent.

Appreciation of Culture
NOTE: Having a town hall meeting is something very American since it exists in small towns, such as
the towns in this book – Lakeview or Seaside. In towns with small populations, the people of the
town gather together in the town hall on set dates to discuss various issues regarding the town. The
mayor or town councilman would usually be in charge of the meeting and the residents who are
interested could present various issues that bother them or that they would like to have done. You
can ask your students if there are such meetings in their city/moshav/kibbutz.
1. Let’s Listen! (Mystery Solutions - Track 4) (Page 150)
Say:
Go to the maps on page 150.
What do you see in the maps?
In what way are the maps similar or different?
Discuss the maps with the class. Elicit that in map #3 there are no buildings, in map #2 there are no
trees or parks, in map #1 there are both buildings and green trees and parks.
Say;
Now you are going to listen to the Town Hall Meeting twice.
While you listen the first time, number which map is being discussed.
Then the second time you listen, you’ll answer the questions in Exercise 2 in your
notebooks.
