tongue.
Look at the examples in your book.
Who can give me a few more examples of
sentences with adjectives?
Now let’s look at how we can compare things.
We call this the ‘comparative form of adjectives’ (Write on board.)
We use the comparative form when we want to compare two people or things.
We say ‘I am shorter than you’. (Write on board.)
So what do we have? Is ‘short‘ the adjective? I added ‘er’ and the word ‘than’.
So we get ‘shorter than’.
Who is short? I am.
Who is less short? You are.
So I am shorter than you.
Let’s look at another example in your book. Alice is taller than Anna..
What do we know about Alice? She’s tall.
What do we know about Anna? She’s tall, but not as tall as Alice.
So we know that Alice is taller than Anna.
What happens if we have a long adjective with more than two syllables, like the word
‘interesting‘?
We can’t add ‘er’ to the long word, so we add the word ‘more‘ if it’s more, and ‘less‘ if it’s
less.
We then get: This book is more interesting than that book. OR This book is less interesting
than that book.
But we still have the same format – comparative adjective + than
Let’s try some together on the board.
Write the following:
o Mary is 12 years old.
o Sally is 13 years old.
o The blue bag costs 15 shekels.
o The green bag costs 22 shekels.
o Table A is 2 meters high.
o Table B is 2.5 meters high.
Have the students write up sentences using the comparative form.
Possible answers:
Mary is younger than Sally.
Sally is older than Mary.
The blue bag is less expensive than the green bag.
The green bag is more expensive than the blue bag.
The blue bag is cheaper than the green bag.
Table A is shorter than Tree B.
Table B is longer than Tree A.
