Reading
Have the students read the comic strip in frames.
Ask:
Frames 1-3
What do the kids tell Tom and Kate’s father? (Someone is going to build a new
neighbourhood in the park.)
How does he react? (Calmly – he wants to talk about it first.)
What does he ask them? (Why is someone planning to build a new neighbourhood?)
Frame 4
Do the kids agree with the need for the new neighbourhood? (Yes, they understand, but
they don’t want it to destroy the animals’ habitat.)
How many homes are planned? (300)
Frames 5-8
How does the father explain that 300 homes doesn’t have to be 300 houses? (They’ll build
apartment buildings.)
What’s the difference between a house and a home? write the words HOUSE and HOME on
the board.
Explain that a house is the actual building and a home is where the family or people
live. it can be anywhere – a house, a tent, a caravan, etc.)
Ask:
What’s the father’s plan? (to build apartment buildings)
What does Kate suggest? (to plant a new tree for every tree that's cut down.)
What does Lily suggest? (having a park with a playground in the middle for each building.)
Frame 7
Why do they have to be brave? (They’re going to take action.)
Where are they going? (to the Lakeview Town Hall Meeting to present their idea)
Why do you think the kids are so surprised? (Accept logical answers.)
After Reading
Ask: (Accept logical answers for all the questions.)
HOTS Do you think they’ll succeed?
HOTS What do you think of this idea – building apartment buildings instead of single family
homes?
HOTS Would you be able to talk in front of all the people in the Town Hall?
