THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 4
Part 5: Green Team Notebooks (page 138-140)
Let’s Remember
Ask:
What clues did the kids learn from their
walk in Lakeview Park? (Remind students
of what they saw in the picture that was
wrong: building debris in water, flattened
grass and reeds leading down to water’s
edge, bird’s nest fallen from bush, grass
flattened, trail of footprints, flashlight
dropped on ground, path has been
cleared through the forest; trees cut
down, branches broken, piece of paper
left behind is a plan of Lakeview Estates).
What did we learn from the notes the
kids took? (the water is polluted, and
trees are cut down).
Curriculum:
AI: Students will understand the
general meaning, main ideas, and
sequence of events in the text and
use this knowledge as needed.
AI: Students will identify different
text types and use this knowledge as

from visual data such as a timetable.

a table of contents.
Reinforce the use of the word -‘habitat’ (food, water, space and shelter) by summing up the
discussion that the animal’s habitat is being destroyed.
1. Let’s Read! (track 40A) (page 138)
Before reading (HOTS- Prediction)

after they read.)
What happened in the park?
Skim the text and find one thing they learned. (The first thing they should come across is
someone cut down trees.)
Vocabulary
New Words:
disappearing
neighbourhood
notice
playground
Present the new words on the board. Have the students find the words in the text. Then ask the
students if they know what the word means. Allow guessing and finally give the right explanation.
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
