3. Word Detective! (page 133)
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks, leaving two blank lines between each
word. Then tell them to go back to the unit and find each word in the texts on pages 129-132. Tell
them to copy the sentences into their notebooks next to each word.
Afterwards, have the students write a new sentence for each word. Explain that it has to be
DIFFERENT from the one they copied from the texts.
When they have finished, go over the answers with them.
Answer Key:
Brave - It is brave and very smart. (p. 132 in "What is it?")
Breathe - They need clean air to breathe, and they need fresh water, too.

Clean up - You and your friends can clean up a park or school playground and plant some

Sea turtle - The sea turtle is one of the few animals in the world that has not changed since
dinosaurs walked the earth! (p. 130 in "What is it?")

Have the students work in their Detective’s Notebook to answer the questions.
They can work in pairs. When they have finished, go over the answers with them.
Answer Key:
1. Similar: a) All animals eat small/smaller animals.

Different: a) They are four different animals.
b) Two of the animals, dolphins and sea turtles, live in water. Two of the animals,
hummingbirds and wolves, live on land.
