Before Reading
Say:
Look at the pictures; who are the Green Team?
How did you recognize them? (They are all
wearing green shirts and ID badges)
Scan the comic strip and write down the names of
the Green Team members. (Sasha, Lily, Jordan and
Ella)

Write the new words on the board.
Have the students look for the
words in the story to see if they can
understand what they mean in the
context of the story.
Ask the students to look at all the
words and see if they can come up
with a good category for most of
the words. Encourage the category of
Nature or Ecology (teach if unfamiliar).
Curriculum:

general meaning, main ideas, and
sequence of events in the text and
use this knowledge as needed.

text types and use this knowledge as

Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
For weaker students: Have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.

Reading
Have the students read the strip in parts. Tell them which frames to read each time.
Ask:
Frames 1-2
Who are the people in the Green Team? (Lily, Sasha, Jordan and Ella)
How do we know they are part of the Green Team? (they have green t-shirts and I.D.
badges.)
What kind of mystery is there? (an eco-mystery)
What is an eco-mystery? (an ecological mystery, something is changing in the environment)
Frames 3-4
Which animals are missing? (hummingbirds and wolves)
Frames 5-7
What is an animal’s habitat? (where it lives, eats and sleeps, its shelter)
How big does it have to be? (It can be very small or very big, depending on the animal.)
