Let’s Notice and Remember (HOTS)
Before looking at the characters in this unit, discuss the
title of the unit.
Curriculum:
AI: Students will locate relevant
information for specific purposes.
Ask and say:
What do you think the title of the unit, "The EcoDetectives", means? (Have students guess.)
"Eco" is short for a word that you may know.
What do you think Eco is short for? (Explain that it’s short for ecology – write the word on
the board or use the word card to show where the ‘eco’ comes from.)
What does ecology mean to you? (Accept answers that are connected.)
Recap some of what they’ve been doing in the book – the different mysteries, the characters.
Remind them of what they already know.
Ask and say:
In what other unit did we have a mystery that was connected to ecology, being green? (unit
2 – have the students say what they remember from the story there)
Now let’s look at the characters.
Ella, Sasha, Lily, Jordan and Tom and Kate’s dad, Mr. Miller are new characters that will
feature in this unit.
What do you think these people will do in the story? (Accept any logical answers.)

What do you think happened to all the animals? (Accept logical answers.)
Do you think Tom and Kate can help? (Accept logical answers.)
