This is Robert Smith, reporting live for Greenville High School Radio. I’m in
Lakeview, at the home of Miss Lucy Bates— the daughter of William Bates. Many
years ago, William Bates gave his art collection to the Lakeview Museum—but a thief
stole two of the paintings last week. I’m standing next to detectives Jack and Amy.
Detectives, this is a very serious crime. Can you tell our listeners what you know?
Well, Robert, we know that the thief entered the museum by cutting a hole in a
window. After that, he stole two paintings—a painting by Chagall and a painting by
Warhol. Then the thief left a note.
The note said that the thief is planning to come back again to take more art.
There’s a van here in the driveway. The ad on the side of the van is for Frank’s
Frames. Is that important?
Kate, do you want to answer that question? This is Kate Miller. Kate and her brother
Tom helped us find the thief.
Sure. We talked to Frank about 20 minutes ago. His company makes frames and fixes
windows. He told us that it’s almost impossible to cut open a window. You need a
special tool..or you can use a diamond! Tom, you saw it. You tell them!
Hi, I’m Tom. Well, Miss Bates has a very big diamond ring. It looks just like the wax
seal on the note that the thief wrote. And Miss Bates is very unhappy that her father
gave his collection to the museum..
So you think that she is the thief? Wait, the front door of Miss Bates’s house is
opening…a man is coming out.
That’s Frank!
And now a policeman is coming out with...is that Miss Bates?
It sure is! And look, one of the policemen is carrying two paintings!
And here’s another policeman. What’s he carrying? Is that a cage?
