ART I — INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL ART
This class covers the basic elements and principles of design and serves as a foundation
for future art classes. Students learn that artistic skills can be learned and are not simply
a natural talent. There is an emphasis on building confidence through skill development.
Each unit includes instruction, practice activities, a major project, a critique of students’
works, and a written test. 2D and 3D media are introduced, including drawing, painting,
sculpture, ceramics, and collage, etc. Emphasis is placed on appreciating diversity in art
and evaluating the art of students, professionals, and masters.
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

ART II — INTERMEDIATE VISUAL ART
This course builds upon the students’ understanding of the elements and principles of
design learned in the introduction course, with a greater emphasis on projects. Through
the works of major artists, students are introduced to the four major philosophies of
art and are encouraged to develop their own styles and philosophies as they learn
and improve their technical skills. Other topics include portrait drawing, caricature,
and sculpture. Additionally, each student researches an individual master artist and
completes a final project done in the style of the master artist. Students are encouraged
to enter art competitions when appropriate opportunities exist. Student work will be
displayed here at school, and students will participate in our annual Gallery Reception.

CERAMICS
This class will allow students to focus on the medium of clay and explore its possibilities.
Class will include both handbuilding (pinch, slab, coil) and potter’s wheel throwing,
as well as glazing techniques. Time will be spent learning proper safety and studio
maintenance, and students will assist with tasks such as wedging clay, loading and
unloading the kiln, etc. Student work will be displayed here at school and
students will participate in our annual Gallery Reception.

Prerequisite: Art I
STUDIO ART
This is a project-based course for students who wish to continue exploring
the visual arts. The majority of work will be done in class, with practice
activities leading up to major projects. A variety of 2D (drawing, painting,
etc) and 3D (sculpture, ceramics) media will be explored. Therapeutic
benefits of art creation will also be a focus of the course. Student work will
be displayed here at school, and students may participate in our annual
Gallery Reception.
